Pro Voice Over in all genres
RICH IN EXPERIENCE, EXPERTISE & EXCELLENCE.
One of the most established & experienced #British #voiceactor in the U.K.

Apparently, even here in Tenerife, it’s #worldvoic Apparently, even here in Tenerife, it’s #worldvoiceday day. So how lucky am I to have a great VO pal like @rameshmahtanivo who lent me his booth once again, for a directed session. And it meant I got to hang out with him and his lovely wife Janice too. #alwaysworking
Most businesses think they’re hiring a voice actor Most businesses think they’re hiring a voice actor.
What they’re actually hiring is a translator.

Someone who takes your internal lingo and your brand
and turns it into something an audience can actually understand.

Two rhyming couplets already. Nice.

Half the time, VOs are fixing things
that hirers didn’t even realise needed fixing.

Communication things.

And sometimes the biggest communication problem isn’t what you’re saying,
it’s how it’s being heard. And that’s where a pro earns their keep.

You don’t need to worry really.
Just keep writing whatever you like.
And let voice actors do the translating.
If you’re rewriting the script during the live ses If you’re rewriting the script during the live session,
hire a VO who can adapt without spinning out.

Rewrites happen.
They always have.

Sometimes the line just doesn’t land.
So the pen comes out, scribbling frantically.
It’s all part of trying to get to the best‑sounding read.

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But when the script is pulling you this way and that,
you need someone who can stay calm and pivot,
delivering a performance with not a wobble.

That’s where experience pays for itself.

Because if you’re rewriting on the spot (and you’re allowed!)
you want a voice actor who can pirouette gracefully and
not one whose comfort zone has just been obliterated.
If you want a natural read… Stop writing sentences If you want a natural read…
Stop writing sentences nobody has ever said out loud.

Voice actors can do a lot.
Lift flat copy, smooth clunky phrasing,
make corporate nonsense sound like it has a heart.

They can even magically turn a legal paragraph, three nested clauses,
and a rogue semicolon into casual sounding conversation.

But if the goal is ‘to sound like you’re chatting to your mate’,
the script could… perhaps… be a little bit more human to begin with, please?

Again, if you want a natural read,
maybe skip the 197 words long sentence
that contains eight parenthetical clarifications, yeah?

Fellow VOs: What’s the worst sentence you’ve ever had to record?
The One Voice Conference, brought to you by @@grav The One Voice Conference, brought to you by
@@gravyforthebrain is drawing closer...

I'm hosting some workshops/sessions.

One is Understanding the Connection Loop - THEORY.
Another is Understanding the Connection Loop - PRACTICAL.

But what is the Connection Loop?
And how will you know when you've found it?

You'll learn how to get inside any script to land each line correctly.
Script interpretation, learning how to do it quickly, and looking for the clues.

We’re living in the era of slop. It’s a horrible w We’re living in the era of slop.
It’s a horrible word, describing a horrible thing.

Every day, another impossible video clip goes viral.
A cruise ship wedged in a canal, a lion doing CPR on a zookeeper.
None of it happened. But without a level of analysis, it sort of maybe looks like it did.

Kind of.

But the more this floods our feeds, the more
we’ll start to doubt the evidence of our own eyes.
And that has huge implications for anyone making content.

Because if audiences can’t trust what they’re seeing
they will need something else to anchor to.

That “something else” is sound.
Humans instinctively use vocal cues
to judge credibility, emotion, and intent.
Long before we had screens, we had voices.
And our brains still treat them as a primary source of truth.

What can’t be replaced is the tiny,
subconscious signals that will tell us:
This is a real person. You can believe them.

And in a world where video is becoming harder to trust
those signals will matter to us more than ever.

A human voice is still one of the most powerful trust‑building tools you have.
And right now, trust is the thing everyone’s fighting for.

What’s the most ridiculous AI video you saw
that people in the comments had believed?
Here we go. The promo train has arrived! This yea Here we go. The promo train has arrived!

This year at @gravyforthebrain's One Voice Conference
I'm hosting some workshops/sessions.

Two of them are on Understanding the Connection Loop.
So, if you're a voice actor and don't know what that is,
just know that this is 'connection' with all of the bells on.

The first is a 50 minute online theory session and goes hand in hand
with the second workshop... which covers the practical side of it!

from@brittanyccox of Sea and Salt Studios.

Thanks so much for having me!
I was really ill with a chest infection while reco I was really ill with a chest infection

But the cough I had in real life
was nothing like the smokers cough
I had to perform in this new commercial.

FIVE MINUTE LIVE DIRECTED SESSION?! It’s not abou FIVE MINUTE LIVE DIRECTED SESSION?!

It’s not about speed. It’s not even about efficiency.
It’s more about everyone showing up ready to create.
And that’s about clarity in planning, trust and experience.

The magic on the mic starts way before you log on.
When the director knows their audience/emotion/end goal,
the talent can hit it instantly. Give me that info, and ye shall receive.

I’ve spoken about bold choices and commitment before.
A five minute session doesn’t exist without those.
When there’s doubt, hesitance, the time
can go on… and on… and on…

And then there’s trust.

If you’ve cast well, you won’t need to micro-manage.
A strong voice actor will self-direct, self-correct, and deliver.

And the final bit of magic is knowing when you’ve got the take.
Chasing perfection never bears fruit. If the take works, it works!

A five minute session may seem like a crazy concept from the outside,
but from the inside it’ s just professionals doing their job.
Yes the rumours are true, I'm heading back to @gra Yes the rumours are true,

regarding the workshops I'm running. Stay tuned.

It’s awards season. Congratulations to all. Award It’s awards season.
Congratulations to all.

Awards look wonderful on a shelf.
All sparkly and impressive, and
a pat on the back from peers.

It’s an interesting thing.
Of course they’re nice to have.
What a boost to get that recognition.

But do they keep the lights on?
The absolute best prizes
are returning clients.

When they come back for a second gig,
a fifth, a tenth… when they come back for 20 years.

When a producer says just do your thing.
When a producer says just do your thing, we trust you.
When a producer says it all by rebooking you time and again.

You can’t fake that stuff.
You can’t submit that stuff for an award.
But it’s the stuff that builds a lifelong career.

Relationships, consistency, reliability,
being the person bookers want?

That’s the real reward.
You can’t afford to stop every 5 minutes to wonder You can’t afford to stop every 5 minutes
to wonder what people think of you.

People will always have their opinions
and frankly, they’re more than welcome to them…

 … I have opinions too!

I learned to stop caring when I cut all my hair off
and started dying it all the colours of the rainbow.

My teachers couldn’t stop me, my parents couldn’t stop me,
the raised eyebrow from the checkout clerk in Tesco couldn’t stop me.

Trying to please other people is the road
to a wishy-washy, no-personality and
non-recognisable existence.

If you’re different for everyone, you become no one.
Trusting instincts, making bold choices, and committing
is not the way to be universally approved, but it does make you...

...unforgettable.

What’s your USP?
It’s true that a lot of people fall into voiceover It’s true that a lot of people fall into voiceover
from unexpected places: dentists, postmen, chefs…

…mortician.

That’s what I wanted to be when I was growing up.
I was fascinated by the science, the ritual, the weight of emotion.

The deeper layers of human experience – that was a draw.
Going where most people won’t – that was a draw.
The precision and detail – that was a draw.

But I was foiled early on. I’m allergic to formaldehyde. Humph.

Such a shame, I’ve definitely got the look!
But it all worked out in the end.
40 years doing very similar
things to a mortician
but in voiceover.

The deeper layers of human experience.
Going where most people won’t.
The precision and detail.

What did you want to be growing up?
When I'm feeling poorly and I've got voiceovers to When I'm feeling poorly
and I've got voiceovers to record...

...well, watch the clip and find out!
Quality is a reflection of you and your brand. Spe Quality is a reflection of you and your brand.
Spent big on a website? That’s great!
Invested in a logo? Nice work!

WHY IS IT NOT THE SAME AS THE AUDIO VERSION OF YOUR BRAND?

You should be trying to make people
feel something at every single opportunity.
You’ll get ROI with your website and your logo
because they do exactly that. Make people feel.

They can instil a feeling of confidence, trust,
curiosity, familiarity, maybe even aspiration…

Can you say the same for something as seemingly
insignificant as your telephone messages?

Do they instil those same feelings?
Or something else entirely.
Unprofessional? Lazy?
Or… BORED?

Let’s hope not. Have a think.
How you sound is just as important as how you look.
Did you know I do a bit of voiceover coaching? I’m Did you know I do a bit of voiceover coaching?
I’m not doing it down but that’s all it is. A bit.

80% of my time is spent voicing.
20% of my time is spent coaching / lecturing.

I’m a voiceover that does a bit of coaching.
I am NOT a coach who does a bit of voiceover.
The distinction is an important one to make because
my students must be confident that I’ve been there and done it.

And a 40 year voiceover career (and counting) says I have.
Yes, you could say “well, you’re only one fifth of a coach.”

Correct. But what a coach!
